Cost breakdown: cabinets vs. countertops
Published October 1, 2026 · Kitchen Renovation CA
Compare itemized cabinet and countertop quotes, identify allowances and exclusions, and plan a kitchen budget.
Separate the quotes before comparing them
A cabinet quote and a countertop quote often cover different work. Ask for supply, delivery, installation, demolition, and related trade work as separate lines. Compare the same scope and specifications rather than a headline total.
What changes the cabinet price
Record the manufacturer and line, cabinet count and dimensions, box construction, door profile, finish, drawer hardware, storage inserts, finished panels, fillers, moldings, and appliance integration. Stock, semi-custom, and custom options differ in flexibility and availability; the selected supplier provides the actual price and lead time.
What changes the countertop price
Confirm material and slab quantity, thickness, edge profile, seams, waterfall panels, sink and cooktop cutouts, fabrication, templating, installation, and backsplash extent. Layout and slab yield can matter as much as square footage. Ask whether tax, delivery, and removal of existing surfaces are included.
A transparent comparison worksheet
Use separate allowances for cabinets, countertops, hardware, backsplash, appliances, plumbing, electrical, labor, design, permits, and site-condition reserves. For example, an illustrative $70,000 plan might allocate $24,000 to supplied and installed cabinetry, $10,000 to fabricated and installed countertops, and $36,000 to all other specified work and allowances. This is arithmetic for discussion, not a market average, quote, or package; appliances or extra work may sit outside it.
Approve selections before release
Review cabinet drawings and appliance dimensions before ordering. Countertop templating usually follows installation of the supporting cabinets. A change in appliance, sink, cabinet dimension, or stone can affect cost and sequence. Use written change orders for agreed scope changes.
Compare a refresh with replacement
If cabinet boxes are sound, compare refacing or refinishing against replacement. Check whether the existing layout provides enough storage and meets the proposed appliance needs before paying for new surfaces on cabinets you may later remove.
Project-specific requirements, selections, and pricing are confirmed after site review.
